Ph.D., University of New Mexico

GPSA Council Chair Candidate 2024
Namaste, I am Ashish Joshi and I am running for Council Chair this election cycle. My topmost priority as the council chair would be to make sure that the council is representative of all graduate programs. I want to ensure transparency, efficiency and timeliness. I want to create an atmosphere for the team that is collaborative, productive and positive. I want to work with the team to provide leadership opportunities to representatives and the graduate student community. I will ensure that all ideas are not only heard at the council but also are channeled into the legislative system. Thank you, Go lobos.
My Story
I am an international student from India currently pursuing my doctoral degree. My journey in student organizations began in 2013 during my freshman year in college, where I have since been actively engaged in various capacities, both in India and the US. At the University of New Mexico (UNM), I founded and served as the inaugural president of Hindu YUVA, the local chapter of a national Hindu student organization. Additionally, I was involved with the Institute of Transportation Engineers, UNM chapter, and initiated the Graduate Student Writing Circle to support peers in their thesis and dissertation writing endeavors. Currently, I represent graduate students on the Teaching Enhancement Committee of the UNM Faculty Senate, where I contribute to discussions and initiatives aimed at improving teaching practices and enhancing the overall student experience.
Over the past decade, I have cultivated my leadership skills through hands-on experience and deliberate learning efforts. Multiple fellowships, including Summa Academia and the Zancada Fellowship here at UNM, have played a pivotal role in shaping me into a well-rounded individual capable of addressing graduate student concerns such as securing funding and employment opportunities, as well as excelling in academia and the professional realm. As a council chair candidate, I aspire to leverage this wealth of experience and knowledge to not only effectively represent graduate student interests but also to empower fellow representatives and students with the insights gained from my experiences.
Furthermore, my involvement in organizing leadership conferences at both national and regional levels has provided me with invaluable skills in foresight and planning, which I believe are essential for effective leadership within the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA). If entrusted with the position of Council Chair, I am committed to fostering a collaborative environment within GPSA, advocating for the diverse needs of graduate students, and working diligently to enact positive changes that benefit our entire community.
I humbly seek your vote, and I am eager for the opportunity to serve as a dedicated and proactive Council Chair for GPSA. Thank you for considering my candidacy.
